Whitewater Chile I

After 2 days of paddling on the Rio Maipo our team was starting to feel settled into the kayaks and ready to start moving south. With our boats and gear loaded on the rigs our next river would be the Rio Teno. The Teno is located 170 Km south from Santiago and from the town of Curico you continue into the mountains.

We hooked up with local paddler Matias in the town of Los Quenes. He has a wonderful secluded campsite that also doubles as a great take-out location for paddling the Upper and Lower sections of the Rio Teno. After setting up camp we cruised back into town to enjoy some local hospitality and wood fired oven pizzas.

Our first day on the Teno we were excited to get some more mileage under the belt and continue our progression. We paddled a great 14km long section of continuous class III whitewater with numerous boofs, technical narrows, and open boulder fields.

The differing whitewater with lulls and cruxes allowed everyone to enjoy some of the Chilean scenery and finally feel the adventure vacation experience taking hold! We finished the paddle perfect day with a monster BBQ and Hot Tub to soak the muscles.

The next morning we woke to another sunshine day and we took the opportunity to work on some boof techniques and proper body positioning for boofing and charging holes! We utilized the technical whitewater at the put-in and after the skills and drills were worked and perfected we moved down a shorter sections of river before organizing and heading to the next river.

Stay tuned to follow the adventures of team Whitewater Chile as we continue to move south and paddle….
