Spanish Pyrenees white water kayaking Casper van Kalmthout

The Pyrenees is a well-known kayaking destination for the all round kayaker. The Noguera Pallaresa offers some great white water III sections, a slalom course and a play feature that was base for the the World Championships 2001 and European Championships 2006 in freestyle. But there is more than the Noguera Pallaresa in the area around Sort, much more, and that is something that not many (foreign) kayakers know. And WHY? Well… In areas where you can’t ski in winter, you usually don’t go kayaking in summer. But this year the Spanish were skiing! And some spring storms topped it off for us. The photos on Facebook by Aniol Serrasolses, Aleix Salvat Cuevas and Albert Aixas made us decide. They were there, paddling some of the best white water in the world, in a beautiful area, ALONE! Two days later Tim Uneken, Sven Joos and myself flew out to Barcelona to accompany the Spanish locals on their local runs: Alto Noguera Pallaresa, Ara, Bujaruelo and Palomeras. White water kayaking in the Spanish Pyrenees.
