Jutta’s Answers
What do you love most about kayaking?
I love the variety that kayaking offers: the many different ways to be on the water. I think it is an absolute privilege to be able to paddle an open canoe over some great lakes, to boof down steep drops in a creek boat or to enjoy big moves in a play spot. It’s all paddling and it’s all great but can offer you completely different experiences. That’s something very special about kayaking that you do not find with many other sports.
When’s the last time you got absolutely worked?
Fortunately that is already a few years ago: on one of my first descents in Chile I didn’t hit the line as planned at the last drop before the take out. I was stuck in a nasty back wash, rolled up a couple of times but couldn’t get out with my boat. So eventually I had to pull my spray deck and swim. My friends got me out quickly with a throw line but we had to let go the boat as there was big unrunnable rapids coming only a couple of hundred meters downstream.
If you could go on a trip anywhere in the world tomorrow, where would it be?
I would pack my bags and head towards Argentina. Patagonia is my favourite place to go kayaking: I have a boat stored there and Argentinean friends who live close to some of the best rivers. And it is not only the rivers in Patagonia which are world class – if you ever go you should not miss the home made ice cream and chocolate there!
What’s your take on the progression of kayaking?
With my clinics and trip reports I like to inspire people to enjoy their time on the water as much as I do. Getting people in their kayaks and helping them to learn and progress with their kayaking skills is a very rewarding thing to do!
