Autumn in the UK – Nouria surfing the Bitches

The bitches are a series of rocks in the tidal race at Ramsey sound in west Wales, well feared by mariners for shipwrecks. On the spring tides and at the Autumn Equinox the current can rip through the rocks at up to 18 knots, and there can be a meter drop from one side to the other. The Bitches is not necessarily the best place for freestyle but it is definitely amongst the greatest places to paddle. It’s like no other wave.

To get there you first have to paddle at least 40 min crossing strong currents and it can get quite scary especially when you have no sea skills. When you finally make it to the wave, you really feel like you’ve earned it. You’re warmed up and all fired up to go on a wave which is really unique.

It’s a big green triangle wave, but the water is incredibly slow. When you’re surfing it, it seems like time is slowing down. This is probably because the Bitches are standing waves in the ocean which change with the tide during session. The wave is only perfect for freestyle for a couple of runs, then it becomes too green to stomp any trick but it stays really good to surf.

Nouria going big when the wave is just perfect

After an entire week stuck in London spending most of my time in the tube and working in an office from 9am to 5.30pm, it was so good to escape the crazy city, head down to Wales and enjoy a bit of nature: camping and paddling.

Early morning breakfast

The first day was tough. We struggled to wake up at 5 am and catch the tide…………… but all for a good reason. The wave and the scenery were amazing and we were lucky enough to be out there with a beautiful sunrise. The wave was perfect and a few seagulls even came by to say hello.

Always hard to get up at 5 am, even though it's for paddling

After kayaking that early we had the full day to chill out and be proper tourists, visiting the area, playing Frisbee, and ending up at a cider festival where we were introduced traditional welsh dancing. Even though it was already October, it tasted like our last summer holydays before getting back to work.

Putting in at sunrise

It was great meeting up with Deb again. She has taught me a lot about kayaking, and we’ve had some really good adventures together in the past. The last time we paddled together was pretty much when we spent Christmas together on the Zambezi in 2009.

Now it all changed, in the UK the weather has turned & its starts to feel like winter. Maybe time for rain so that there is a chance for good levels. I’m really looking forward to paddling the wave at Hurley !!!! Roll on the Hurleyfest !!!!!!
